Chris Rock: ‘Damn Right, Hollywood Is Racist’ Says The Oscars 2016 Host

Written by 1 minute, 36 seconds Read

The controversy surrounding Leonardo DiCaprio not having won an Oscar until last night’s Academy awards seemed like small talk compared to the show host Chris Rock put on. The comedian used his platform to make light of the Oscar’s seemingly lack of diversity. Rock brought comedy to what some would say is a serious issue in Hollywood.

The show was a mix of jokes representing both sides of the argument in #Oscarssowhite. The 51-year-old would take shots at the Will Smith and his wife, Hollywood being racist, and eventually had a segment where black movie-goers were interviewed while being exposed to the name of Oscar nominated films. Most of them had no recollection of the films named.

One of his most notable lines of the night was his opening one.

“Welcome to the Oscars otherwise known as the white people choice awards”.

The Oscars came under fire recently due to its lack of diversity and snubbing of black actors. The prestigious ceremony especially caught attention when Will Smith and his wife Jada commented on the situation.

“Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power. And we are a dignified people, and we are powerful. So let’s let the Academy do them, with all grace and love. And let’s do us, differently.” – Jada Pinkett Smith

Rock would go on to acknowledge the fact that actor Michael B. Jordan should have been a nominee for an award and even closed by inviting anybody to the next BET awards. The Oscars had an 8 year low of 34.3 million viewers at this year’s show.
