We have been exceptionally energized for the return of Janet Jackson. Musically truant since the tragic death of her brother, Micheal Jackson in 2009, Janet has made a comeback to our ears and hearts and the stories are all in the songs. She released a mixture of singles, leading up to the release – “No Sleeep” featuring J. Cole, the uptempo “Burnitup!,” the sexy “S.E.X.L.I.N.E.S,” and the album titled track “Unbreakable”; which have all been, to put it plainly, stunning!

Janet released this album with little to no warning or promotion, well maybe a little. While she certainly wasn’t the first to do it, Beyoncé’s self-titled album in 2013 set the benchmark for rappers, singers, producers, and etc to attempt the method at their own risk. The thing is, since everybody seemingly attempts it now it’s not really surprising when it happens at this point but we are all excited for Janet’s release.

With the long last release of her eleventh studio album, Unbreakable, yesterday (October 2nd). At 19 tracks, Janet shuns the bevy of producers that worked on her last album, 2008’s Discipline, and rather reunites with her long-term producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to create the musical masterpiece of Unbreakable. Restricted to only two music features, J. Cole and Missy Elliott, the album is nostalgic in the throwback R&B grooves (she even adds her own 1997 single “I Get Lonely” on “Dammn Baby”) yet with a more present day feel.
