The Breakfast Club radio talk show always has the toughest guests only to be asked the toughest questions. On the February 23rd, rapper French Montana would appear on the show. He took the platform to discuss his view on what the music industry wants in rap and why rappers like Kendrick Lamar are held in such high regard while street rap takes a back seat.
He was asked the usual questions that fans and viewers would want answers to and there was one question that seemed to bother him or be something he would rather not discuss on air. Host Charlamange tha God asked Montana about a lyric on his latest mixtape.
“Why isn’t street rap selling like Kendrick?”
The Moroccan artist initially dodged the question until it was brought up again then he answered.
“Cause they position him like how they did at the Grammys as the new music. Not that it’s not the right thing to do but I just feel like…. The whole thing was Kendrick’s night”
With conscious artists such as J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West at the forefront of hip-hop things such as mixtapes, underground, and street rap have suffered in sales while there has been a demand for more music touching social and political issues.
French Montana went on to state that the whole hip-hop industry doesn’t sound like that. Check out the interview below as he discusses new Mixtape “Wave Gods”, his relationship with Khloe Kardashian, Max B and much more with The Breakfast Club.
