The second wave of draft-eligible quarterbacks took the field today at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium and the two most notable names there stole the show. Former Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch and North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz shined bright in drills over other notable quarterbacks such as Cardale Jones, Dak Prescott, and Christian Hackenberg. The two though from smaller schools gave reasons why they should be a top draft pick in 2016.
Standing at 6 feet 7 inches Lynch has the prototypical body type that NFL coaches dream of. At the Combine, he backed up his talked up athleticism with a show of raw talent that impressed scouts. Area’s that lacked included his drop step and taking the ball from the center due to his lack of experience in a pro-style offense but none the less Lynch was called quick along with being said to have poise. The former Memphis Tiger ran his 40-yard dash in 4.86 seconds. He drew comparisons to Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans.
Wentz is an interesting case hailing from an FCS school of lesser talent only to be held in the highest regard to some. Wentz has never NOT won a national championship and on film makes effortless yet nearly flawless throws. Playing below the standard was easy to Wentz. In Indy, he ran a 4.77 in the 40-yard dash and wowed scouts with his zip on passes. He also had the best accuracy on the day as he too drew some comparisons. “The more I see of this kid and the more I hear from teams on him, I’m convinced he’s a Top 10 pick,” – NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock
Other notable quarterback’s Christian Hackenberg and Cardale Jones did not have as well of a showing. Hackenberg a former Penn State standout showed inaccuracy on short to intermediate passes and often put too much on his long balls. Coming into the Combine, there were questions and uncertainty regarding his arm as he completed just 56% of his passes in 3 years of college. Jones an Ohio State product who went 8-0 in his only career starts before losing the job pulled his hamstring during the 40-yard dash and did not complete the day.
