Justin Timberlake, having already found sexy and returned it to its rightful place, wants to bring the ’60s back. At least that’s the silky-smooth retro premise of “Suit & Tie,” the former ‘N Syncer’s first official music video since 2007. Shot in black-and-white by The Social Network andGirl with the Dragon Tattoo director David Fincher, the video features JT engaging in a range of old-timey activities, like singing into vintage microphones, dressing like Don Draper, and sipping scotch with Jay-Z.
What do critics think of Timberlake’s Rat Pack-ish comeback? Well, the video “feels artistic but not opaque,” says Sam Lansky at Idolator. “There’s a lovely cinematic quality to the visuals and enough swagger in JT’s agile dancing to carry us through.” Alex Young at Consequence of Soundsays, “This sure as hell beats a box of chocolates… Hopefully we get to see them [Timberlake and Jay-Z] do this live and in person soon enough.” Meanwhile, MTV‘s James Montgomery says“Fincher is at his finest, directing a clip that brings to mind some of his previous best (Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ and ‘Express Yourself’ off the top of my head), and perfectly capturing the tailored, three-fingers-of-scotch style of the song itself.”
