“The Birth Of a Nation” Will Premiere in Theaters Early October

Written by 1 minute, 36 seconds Read

The highly anticipated film, “Birth of a Nation” will make its debut nationwide October 17th, 2016. This film was not only written and directed by Nate Parker but also stars him as the leading role. Talk about multi-talented! As a Virginia Native being raised 40 miles east of Where Nat Turners Rebellion took place, Nate Parker successfully expressed his outlook on the circumstances of slavery in the 1880’s. The film depicts Nat Turner’s journey and his rebellion in 1831, earning its place in history as the highest film purchased by a movie house. Specifically, Fox Searchlight costing 17.5 million according to reports.

Stars including Gabrielle Union, Jackie Earle Haley, Aja Naomi King, Penelope Ann Miller, and Armie Hammer will premier in this breathtaking film. Parker stated that he wanted to make “the birth of a nation” in the hopes of creating change agents that people can watch and be affected. At the Sundance Film Festival, the film received a standing ovation, and successfully stood as a representation for the backlash of Oscar nominations early this year emulating lack of diversity.

Nate Parker stated:

“I just want you, if you are affected and are so moved, to ask yourself, are there systems in my life that need attention, whether it be racial, or gender?, there are a lot of injustices”

His goal of raising eyebrows on topics or swaying the audience’s knowledge while watching the film seems to be executed with substance. Strategically speaking the film’s debut is just in time for award season; the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Academy Awards. Let’s see if “birth of a Nation” is enough to be awarded!
